Report

You would have thought you were on the Costa del Sol. Never have we had such a beautiful, warm and sunny day! It was a great start to the season.

Our judge, Helen Needham, sorted through the dressage entries in good time. In the single horse class, Jock McFarlane's Archie had the second best score in the whole event (57), with Ruth Skinner only 2 points behind with Rodney. A little light relief was provided by Karen Blair-Imrie's new Kladruber mare, Empolla, who apparently thought that various airs above the ground were acceptable substitutes for halt and walk in Pre-Novice Test A. In the single ponies, Sue Hendry notched up the best score of the day (53) with her tried and true Tomahawk, followed by Audrey Barron with her Highland pony Bluebell on 64. Zoe Sanders' pair of Hackney ponies led the multiples with 67, and Catriona Love the newcomers with Finn on 69.

The cones course, designed this year by Karen, was the scene of several eliminations, although Ian Thornton-Kemsley with his squad of family helpers kept us all on time. Number 5 must have begged to be driven backwards, so Judy Stoneley with Ash, and Doreen Johnson driving Belzar's Murdock, duly obliged, while Jock McFarlane, perhaps still dizzy from his shining result in the dressage, decided to chase a really impossible time by not driving numbers 11 and 12 at all. It was left to Sue Hendry to fly through the course in a lovely double clear for the best cones result, winning on time over Elinor Bosanquet and Catriona Love, the only other double clears.

Because of the large entry of 25, we could only drive the four obstacles once, rather than twice as we had last year. Hew designed them with especially wide and easy gates since we had 8 newcomers. Obstacle 1, the tyres, proved the undoing of several competitors when they shot straight through D right after A, and Jennifer Landale put her groom down in Obstacle 4, but apart from that everything went smoothly. Carolyn Love whizzed round with Joker for a score of 23 in the single horse class, followed by Judy Stoneley on 29.2. Sue Hendry again dominated the single ponies on 21.2, with Audrey Barron hard behind on 23.4. In the multiples, Zoe Sanders nippy little pair finished on 37 and Liz Melville's tandem was great fun to watch with 46.2. Vaclav Vladar, driving Cheshmire Reaps Majestic, gave an outstanding first performance by winning the obstacle phase in the newcomers class on 27.4, followed by Catriona Love with 28.4. Fred Stegeman, also a newcomer, did well to finish with his pair of skewbald ponies put to a red phaeton well over the standard wheel width.

Our grateful thanks must go to Helen Needham, our dressage judge, to Ian Thornton-Kemsley, our cones judge, to Kym, our Sec E starter, and to all the obstacle judges, without whom this event could not have taken place.
